Father's Day Reflections
Remembering my dad while reflecting on a different journey
Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there today! Thought I would send the newsletter out early to acknowledge the great fathers on their special day.
Today marks the 10th Father's Day since my dad passed away. Personally, I must admit that I am feeling a bit melancholy about that today…
Like many families, Father's Day brings back memories. I think about my dad's strength, his commitment to family, and one of the greatest gifts he gave us—he always showed up. Whether it was a game, a school event, a family gathering, or a time when we simply needed him, he was always there-most of the time very quietly, but his presence was always felt.
As the years pass, I miss his presence, but I appreciate his example even more. The values he lived continue to influence how I approach life, relationships, and coaching.
Father's Day also brings a different emotion for me. Due to circumstances in my life, I was never able to become a father. As I read the social media posts celebrating fathers and see families gathering together, there are moments I must admit that I feel a little left out.
At the same time, I have been fortunate to spend much of my life working with young people. Through coaching and education, I've had opportunities to encourage, teach, support, and care about hundreds of athletes and students. While that is not the same as being a father, it has been one of life's greatest blessings.
So today, I celebrate my dad and the impact he had on my life. I celebrate the fathers who continue to show up for their families. And I am reminded that influence comes in many forms. Sometimes the greatest gift we can give others is simply our presence.
Happy Father's Day to all who lead, support, teach, mentor, and show up for the people who need them. Your efforts and commitments are needed and appreciated!
Have a great week!
