It Doesn't Matter-Get Better
Caitlin Clark reminds us that yesterday's result is history. Today's effort shapes tomorrow's result.
Whenever I mention Caitlin Clark, people often assume I'm going to tell another story about the night she scored 60 points against one of my teams. Don’t worry-I won’t share it this time!
Last Friday, night, as I watched from home, Caitlin scored 45 points in a WNBA game and put together another remarkable performance that looked quite familiar to me! But what caught my attention wasn't the stat line—it was her response afterward.
When asked about her performance, her message was very simple: “It doesn't matter. Get better.”
That mindset reminded me of well known leadership and culture coach Brian Kight's philosophy: don't become consumed by the result. Learn from it, then focus on what's next.
It's a lesson all of us can use.
We live in a world that celebrates results. We count wins, points, promotions, likes, followers, grades, and accomplishments. Those things can be meaningful, but they don't define us. Having that much success can make us comfortable, and failure can make us discouraged if we allow either one to become our focus.
For Caitlin and for all of us, the better question is, "What's next?"
How can I improve? What can I learn? How can I help someone else? What small step can I take today that makes tomorrow a little better?
Whether you're a coach, teacher, parent, business leader, student, or athlete, yesterday's result is exactly that—yesterday's result. Celebrate the wins with humility. Learn from the setbacks with honesty. Then get back to work.
Because in the end, it's not the score that shapes us.
It's our commitment to keep getting better.
Have a great week!
