Never Stop Learning

The best investment we can make is in the person we are becoming

By the time you read this on Monday morning, I'll be in Coralville attending the National High School Athletic Coaches Association Convention. I'll have the opportunity to present on the IGCA Mentoring Program while also attending sessions as a basketball coach, learning from others who are passionate about helping young people grow.

After more than 35 years in education and coaching, some people have asked why I still go to clinics and conventions. The answer is simple: because I still have so much to learn.

One of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves is the commitment to remain lifelong learners. Whether it's reading a book, attending a conference, listening to a podcast, learning a new skill, or simply having a meaningful conversation with someone who sees the world differently, growth keeps us energized and moving forward.

I've also learned that when you find something you're truly passionate about, learning doesn't feel like work. It feels like an opportunity. Time seems to disappear because you're doing something that challenges you, excites you, and gives you purpose.

But learning is only part of the journey. The real impact comes when we're willing to share what we've learned with others. That's one of the things I'm looking forward to most on Monday—not just learning from coaches across the country, but also sharing ideas that have made a difference in Iowa. When we teach, mentor, and encourage others, our own learning deepens, and everyone benefits.

As you begin a new week, ask yourself three simple questions:

  • What am I learning?

  • What am I passionate about?

  • Who can I share it with?

I saw this quote from Iowa educator and coach, Matthew Getz, that sums up well my thinking about learning and sharing: “Because knowledge grows when it's shared, passion becomes contagious when it's lived, and the best learning often happens when we help someone else grow.”

I hope you will share some knowledge and wisdom with someone this week!

Have a great week!
