Spring is for Growth

What are you planting right now?

Spring is a season of new beginnings, and I have felt that a lot the last week. Most of you know I love golf and I was finally able to get a few rounds in this week! I am wrapping up the final steps of my second book and will start the process of getting it out to the public! I look forward to sharing more details about the book here soon!

I have also spent some time planning my next garden. Each year, I have tried to add more garden space (thus getting rid of more lawn to mow… 😀) and I am thinking of adding some raised garden beds. Although the weather hasn’t been good enough to plant anything, the air definitely feels lighter, the days are growing longer, and some flowers are starting to sprout again.

As I have been thinking through plans, it was a reminder that growth doesn’t happen overnight—it begins with intention, preparation, and time. Everyone sees the final products that come out of gardens or flower beds for books but most don’t see the work behind the scenes to get to that point.

Whether you’re a coach, athlete, leader, or just someone navigating the ups and downs of life, this season is a perfect time to reflect on what you’re planting—in your habits, relationships, mindset, and vision of future plans. Because what you plant now determines what you’ll harvest later.

Do you have any plans on what you can “plant” this spring? Here are a few ideas you might consider:

  • Developing Habits that Lead to Growth
Are you being intentional with your daily routines? Like planting seeds, the small things you do consistently (reading, planning, reflection, rest) determine your future results. Are there any positive habits you would like to build? One of mine is getting more exercise time in, especially golf!

  • Creating Mindsets That Grow Resilience
Spring isn’t just about planting—it’s also about weathering the unexpected. The best leaders and athletes develop a mindset that embraces challenges as part of the process. As we have talked about previously, this is learning to handle hard better!

  • Building Positive Relationships That Matter
Invest time in the people around you that really matter. This could be teammates, family, friends, or peers. Growth happens faster—and deeper—when you’re rooted in strong, supportive connections. I am working really hard on this one…spending more time investing in the people who bring positive to my life and less time worrying about those who bring too many negatives to life.

  • Having a Vision for the Future
What are you working toward in the weeks, months, and even years ahead? Now is the time to clarify your vision and take the first steps toward it, even if the full picture isn’t clear yet. It doesn’t matter what age you are-we are all getting older-but life continues and we need to always think about what is next and what we can leave for a legacy. My mom turns 92 in May….we talked this week about what is next for her and what she is looking forward to! We should always keep living, no matter what age we are!

  • Letting Go of What No Longer Serves You
Just as we prune to help things grow, sometimes we have to release old habits, roles, stories, or even people that no longer fit where we’re going. The spring is a perfect time to get rid of those things that are dragging us down and move on to things that lift us up. I am working on this as well in a few ways-doing this is hard-but necessary some times if we wish to make our lives better.

We all know that growth is a process and something that doesn’t happen overnight. During the spring, we often admire the gardens, the flowers, and the bloom without acknowledging the quiet work that came before it. Growth isn't loud or immediate—it’s daily, it’s disciplined, and it’s often unseen until one day… it shows up for all to see!

So as nature begins to bloom around you, ask yourself:
What am I planting today that will grow into something meaningful tomorrow?

Your future self—and those you around you—will thank you for the seeds you’re sowing right now. The best time to start is NOW! Happy planting! Have a great week!
