Stay Coachable
Why leaders, coaches, and everyone in between need to keep learning
I have been working with my new GHV girls basketball team now for one month. It has been a great experience so far and the team has been awesome to work with-positive attitudes, great listeners, and work very well together. Their previous coaches and their families have clearly done an excellent job of bringing them up the right way and I love how coachable they all are. I have learned a lot from them and appreciate the energy they bring every day.
4 Titans of the Creator Economy. One Stage. One Day.
You know their names. You’ve followed their success. But you’ve never seen them all in one place—until now.
On July 16th, four of the most influential minds in the creator space are coming together for a live, virtual event: The Creator Business Summit.
Shaan Puri. Codie Sanchez. Chris Koerner. Tyler Denk.
They’ve built newsletters, brands, and 7-figure companies. And they’re breaking down how they did it. For free. For you.
From audience growth to monetization to long-term brand strategy, this is your chance to learn directly from the best.
Whether it’s day 1 or you’ve been building for a while, this is the one event you can’t afford to miss.
When people hear the word “coachable,” they often think of players—athletes who are eager to learn, open to feedback, and willing to grow. But here’s the truth:-being coachable isn’t just for players. It’s for all of us. I have been working on plans for year 2 of the IGCA’s mentoring program and we have added tiers to the program to offer support for any coach that is interested.
A key to a successful mentoring program is the willingness of the mentee to be coachable. Whether you’re leading a team, teaching in a classroom, parenting kids, or simply trying to be a little better than you were yesterday, the ability to stay coachable—teachable, humble, curious—could be your greatest strength.
Here are some thoughts about what being coachable means to me:
Asking questions instead of always giving answers
Seeking feedback without getting defensive
Admitting when you don’t know something
Staying curious—even in areas you’ve already had success
One of the best public speakers I know still takes notes like a rookie at every event he attends. He has years of experience and is a highly sought out speaker, but he’ll tell you: “The moment you think you’ve arrived is the moment you start falling behind.”
I’ve sat in rooms with successful business leaders, veteran teachers, and hall-of-fame coaches—and the ones who keep growing are always the ones still learning. I saw many examples of this at the NHSACA convention I attended-the majority of the coaches there were veteran and highly successsful coaches who were still looking for ways to learn and improve. Getting better doesn’t happen by accident….it takes an open mind and a willingness to learn in every circumstance.
Being coachable applies to all of us-here are some examples:
Players grow when they learn to take feedback as a gift, not a threat.
Coaches grow when they listen more than they speak, and don’t hide behind experience.
Leaders grow when they invite different perspectives, even if it challenges their comfort.
Everyday people grow when they read, reflect, and reach beyond what they already know.
Growth mindset is a big buzzword right now that sometimes gets overused but overall it is true—t’s saying: “I haven’t figured it all out yet and can always get better”, and that’s a good thing!
If you’re reading this, you’re probably already the kind of person who wants to grow. But the real test is what you do with that desire. Something to ask yourself is who am I learning from right now? When was the last time I tried something new or asked for feedback? Am I the kind of person that others can teach or coach?
Staying coachable isn’t a sign of weakness—it’s a sign of strength. The best coaches are still learners. The best leaders are still students. And the best people are still growing. I hope you will keep learning, keep leading, and stay coachable! Have a great week!
