The Emotions of Senior Night

A time of reflection, appreciation, and gratitude for the journey

As the winter sports season winds down, one of the traditions at every school is Senior Night where the seniors who are playing their last year at their school, are honored for the time and commitment they have put in. It is more than just a game-it’s a day filled with emotions, reflection, and appreciation for the time and effort these athletes have put in. It’s a great reminder that activities are a true journey and the process they each go through is worthy of a great celebration as well as recognition of all who have supported them.

I had the unique experience this year of attending the Mason City senior night activities this year as a fan after experiencing it as a coach previously. I personally had witnessed the journey each of these ladies had been on, including the open gyms, camps, practices, and thousands of miles they had spent on the road participating in an activity they loved. As players and their parents were introduced to the crowd, there was a lot of emotion from everyone, and I’m sure there were a lot of grandparents, other relatives, and friends who were flooded with emotion and memories of what their senior had accomplished.

I felt those emotions as well and especially a sense of gratitude. Grateful for the opportunity I had to coach them and and an appreciation for the entire experience they had-the highs and lows, the challenges and the victories-all of which have hopefully contributed to their growth. The team became their second family and teammates became second sisters. I know these bonds will continue throughout their lives and I’m excited to see where life takes them and follow their journeys to come.

It’s easy to get caught up in the competitive nature of sports during games and the season, but Senior Night reminds athletes to pause and appreciate the entire experience. The highs and lows, the challenges and triumphs—all of it has contributed to their growth. Taking a moment to reflect on how far they’ve come helps seniors leave with a sense of fulfillment and pride. We all know that sports teach more than just physical skills. Senior athletes walk away with lessons in leadership, resilience, teamwork, and discipline—qualities that will serve them long after their athletic careers end. Returning athletes get to see the impact of this night on the seniors and it hopefully gives them a realization of how fast time goes and to appreciate each step of the journey they are on.

Senior Night is a powerful reminder of the impact of sports—not just in wins and losses, but in personal growth, lifelong friendships, and the lessons learned along the way. While it marks the end of one chapter, it also serves as a celebration of everything these athletes have accomplished and a stepping stone toward the future. Whether you’re an athlete, a parent, or even a coach like me, I hope you take the time to express gratitude for the experience, and honor the incredible journey that led to this moment.

So thank you senior athletes for making it to this momentous occasion in your young lives with many more accomplishments to come. I know your appreciation for your experience will continue to grow with you! Shoutout to all of the parents, other relatives, youth coaches, and friends who helped them get this far. No one makes this journey alone! Have a great week!
