The Value of a Pause
Rest isn't the opposite of growth--it's part of it!
This week marks Iowa's annual "Dead Week," a time when schools pause all athletic activities and coaches have no contact with their players. At first glance, it may seem like a week when nothing gets accomplished from an athletic’s end.
I would argue it's one of the most important weeks of the year.
Today's students-athletes are busier than ever. Between sports, camps, strength training, summer jobs, family commitments, and trying to squeeze in time with friends, it's easy to move from one activity to the next without ever slowing down. Adults aren't much different. Our calendars fill quickly, and we often wear our busy schedules like a badge of honor. Despite my “retirement”, I often feel the same way!
But none of us are designed to go full speed all the time.
Athletes understand that muscles don't become stronger during the workout—they become stronger during recovery. The same is true for our minds, our relationships, and our overall well-being. Rest gives us the opportunity to recharge, gain perspective, and return with renewed energy for the opportunities ahead.
We often say our families are our top priority. Dead Week gives us the opportunity to prove it. Whether your plans include a family vacation, a quiet evening on the deck, a round of golf, dinner with friends, or simply putting your phone away for a while, I believe we should all embrace the pause, be where your feet are, and enjoy the people around you.
The goal of Dead Week isn't to take a week away from sports. It's to give a week back to your life. I hope you will take advantage of this time as it is designed.
The next season will be here soon enough. Sometimes the most productive thing we can do is step away for a little while—so we're ready to give our best when it's time to step back in.
Have a great (dead) week!
