We've Reached Halftime, 2025
Why the start of July should be a time of reflecting, recalibrating, and moving upward
In case you missed it, July 1 snuck up on us last week. Maybe you felt it, maybe it slipped by—but here’s the truth: we’re officially halfway through 2025! I brought that up to my basketball team as it is also the halfway point of our summer work together. We have had a great first three weeks but there is still time left to work on and improve on their skills through summer work.
July 1 is a milestone in itself, but what really made me pause was something I saw online: “As of July 1, 2025, we are closer to the year 2050 than we are to the year 2000.”
Let that sink in.
In basketball coaching, we talk a lot about halftime—the chance to step back, assess the first half, and make the adjustments necessary to finish strong and hopefully win the game. That’s exactly what this time of year can be if we choose to treat it that way: a chance to reflect on how far we’ve come and re-focus on what’s still possible.
I would challenge you to take a moment to look back on the past six months—not just your calendar, but what have you accomplished? What have you fallen short of? Here are a couple of questions to consider:
What goals did you set and how many did you hit?
What progress did you make that maybe didn’t come with a prize or with praise, but mattered just as much?
What habits or relationships have gotten stronger? What regrets do you have in these areas?
Personally, I’ve had the opportunity to publish a book, present at a national convention, connect with coaches from across the country, and taken on a new coaching job. Those are wins I wouldn’t have imagined back in January. But it’s not just about big milestones. Sometimes it’s about just showing up, staying consistent, or bouncing back after a tough stretch that can be a win worth recognizing.
Now flip the script. We’ve got six months left. That’s 180+ days to make progress, change direction, or double down on what’s already working. What could be different by December 31 if you get started right now with a new habit or a new initiative?
I’m not trying to put pressure on you but I’m hopefully getting you to think about future possibilities. You don’t need to do everything, but you can do something. Maybe it’s launching a new side project, reconnecting with a long-lost friend or relative, doing things that give you energy back, or simply being more present in the day-to-day moments.
And if the first half didn’t go as planned? Good news: there’s still time on the clock. Adjustments can be made, and the “game” can be won!
Getting back to the 2050 vs. 2000 realization… it’s more than a trivia fact—it’s a wake-up call. Time is moving and stops for no one. The future is not a distant someday-it’s now. The way we lead, coach, connect, and live today is shaping the world we’ll step into tomorrow.
Let’s not wait to be who we’re becoming. July 1 is more than a date on the calendar—it’s a call to reflect, recharge, and redirect where needed. Take time to reflect on your journey so far-celebrate the wins, learn from the misses, and get clear on what matters most moving forward.
You’re not out of time—you’re right on time! Let’s make the second half count! Onward and upward! Have a great week!
